In 2020, Formula 1 driver Valtteri Bottas set a blistering record at the Italian Grand Prix, clocking the fastest top speed ever recorded in an F1 race—231.4 mph (372.5 km/h). Meanwhile, in the world of IndyCar, Paul Tracy once reached a staggering 256.948 mph (413.5 km/h) during qualifying at Michigan International Speedway in 1996. These feats are more than just numbers—they represent the razor-thin edge between glory and catastrophe in open-wheel racing, where drivers push the limits of physics and human reflexes.
Open-wheel racing refers to motorsport categories where the wheels are exposed and not enclosed by bodywork. The two most prominent series are Formula 1 (F1) and IndyCar. F1 races on road and street circuits worldwide with highly advanced hybrid cars, while IndyCar features a mix of road, street, and oval tracks in North America. Both demand elite driving skill, engineering excellence, and split-second decision-making. Below F1 are the feeder series focused on driver development. This includes F2, F3, FR (regional) and F4.
Formula E, where the cars share a similar design but feature battery packs. Unlike other racing series, Formula E happens on one jam-packed day. The shakedown, practice sessions, qualifying, Super Pole shoot-out, and E-Prix (the race) all occur on the same day with a few exceiptions. There are other differences from F1 and Indy but will not be covered herein.
FICOR Score
(Fatality & Injury Classification of Risk)
FICOR score is based on XDGE's proprietary scoring system
This FICOR score is based on available data combined with XDGE's proprietary scoring system which weights, Insurance scores, reaction time available as adverse event unfolds, speed, height, depth, technical difficulty, ability to mitigate risk during activity, backup equipment, other participants, location of activity, mental focus required, result of most mishaps, and the likelihood of major accident if sport done frequently.
